Cutu is the Romanian whist with bidding: four players in two fixed partnerships sitting across from each other. Every hand deals 8 cards from a 32-card deck (7 up to Ace); everyone bids 4 to 8 tricks or passes, and the winning bidders must fulfil the contract as a team. If the opponents take zero tricks, that is a cutu — and the score doubles!

Cutu in a nutshell

Played with 32 cards (7–A), 8 to each of four players in two partnerships. Each hand starts with a round of bidding: 4 to 8 tricks or pass, strictly increasing. The highest bidder becomes declarer — at 5+ tricks they pick the trump suit (or no-trump); at 4 the trump is automatically their best colour. The declarer's team must take at least the bid: made = +bid (+1 per extra trick), set = −bid; defenders score +1 per trick over 4. If a team takes zero tricks, that is a cutu and the other side's points double. First team to 100 points wins.

How many players and teams play Cutu?

Four players in two fixed partnerships of two. Partners sit opposite each other and share a score.

How does the bidding work?

Each player bids once per hand: 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 tricks, or pass. Every bid must be strictly higher than the previous one; if everyone passes, the hand is redealt.

You must play a trump if you have one, and you must beat an already-played trump with a higher one when able. If you cannot, you may discard any card.

How much is a made contract worth?

Points equal to the bid — a made contract of 5 scores +5, plus +1 for each overtrick. A set contract of 5 costs −5.
